Building Business Agility in an Uncertain World
Our Summer Conference provides a focal point for members and partners to gather, share experiences and learn. This year, under blazing Manchester skies, we met for three days at Manchester Metropolitan University to discuss how the principles of business agility can help the higher education sector thrive in an ever-changing landscape.
The conference programme was packed with useful insights into making ourselves and our university professional services and operational activities fit for the unprecedented challenges ahead for our sector.
Among the highlights were the opportunity to learn from the students of tomorrow in a world-cafe style session and the four keynotes. Professor Malcolm Press, Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University set the scene with an overview of the current HE and political environment. Adam Kingl of Duke University Business School showed how the principles of business agility help us adapt and respond to opportunities ahead, and motivational speaker Michael Heppell delivered an inspirational session on challenging belief systems and delivering excellence. Alice Webb, Director BBC Children's and BBC North, drew parallels with higher education as she described the enormous challenge of moving the BBC north in her keynote on organisational design and reinvention for the digital age.
A range of workshops tailored to HE delegates' interests spanned leadership, sustainability, property development, mental health. change management, emergencies, organisational culture, outsourcing and international perspectives on careers in residence life and university catering.
