09 May 2019
Eight students working as residence assistants at six universities and two private accommodation providers in the UK have been recognised at the CUBO Residence Life Conference with a 2019 CUBO RA Award.
Maddison Carne (University of East London), Jake Saville (University of the Arts, London), James Hobson (University of Leicester, pictured), George Moore (Campus Living Villages), Shiyi Xu (Prime Student Living), John Cullen-Kennedy (King's College, London), Joseph Markey (The University of Edinburgh) and Amber O'Connor (Manchester Metropolitan University) were nominated by their institution and selected by an international judging panel from the higher education sector for their exceptional contribution to residence life.
The winners were presented with their award at a dinner on 7 May during the two-day CUBO Residence Life Conference, which formed part of their prize. Jake, Joseph and Amber, who were unable to attend, will receive their awards from colleagues who accepted on their behalf.
A separate award for best New Residence Life Professional went to Rebecca O’Hare, Head of Residence Life for Campus Living Villages UK. Presented by Grant Walters, Director of Educational Programs at Acuho-I, the prize includes funding from Acuho-I and CUBO to attend the 2019 Acuho-I Conference in Toronto.
Speaking after the Awards, Jan Capper, CEO of CUBO said: “Residence life is about helping young people to navigate what can be a daunting experience. In some cases it is the difference between finishing a degree or even saving a life. What these young RAs and others like them across the country do is immensely important to our universities. CUBO will continue to lead in residence life and ultimately we would like to see a residence life programme at every university in the UK and Ireland.”
