Richard scoops ACUHO-I award


The Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I) recently presented CUBO Executive member, Richard Kington, with the 2014 Roelf Visser Global Initiatives Award. Richard was instrumental in CUBO becoming an ACUHO-I affiliate in 2010 and is credited with further growing the association’s international membership.

CUBO is delighted to announce the shortlisted entries for the 3rd annual CUBO Awards, taking place on 3rd July. After a whole day of enthusiastic debate, the CUBO Awards judging panel finally managed to whittle down the large number of entries to a shortlist of three or four candidates in each category. The judges were impressed by the range of entries and the inspirational work taking place in our sector today.

CUBO chair Frances Stone presented the gold, silver and bronze winners with their Service Skills Awards at the TUCO competitions 2014. The Service Skills Challenge, sponsored by CUBO, ran over two days in March and aimed to recognise and encourage the importance of the food service team.

CUBO appoints new chair


Frances Stone, Director of Residential and Commercial Services at the University of Leicester, has been appointed Chair of CUBO. Frances succeeds Geoff Pringle, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at the University of Exeter, who stepped down from the role in late 2013. In the process, Frances becomes the first female Chair in CUBO’s history.

Royal setting for CUBO awards 2014


Now in its third year, the CUBO Awards return with a new category for 2014. An award to celebrate excellence in sport will debut alongside the seven other categories. This year’s awards take place on 3rd July at Royal Holloway, University of London, in the beautiful original dining hall of the 19th century Founders Building.

On Tuesday 17 December ten CUBO members joined representatives from the UK property sector to celebrate the launch of the British Property Federation's Student Accommodation Committee. The committee has been set up to provide a collective voice for the purpose built student accommodation sector, which will play a vital role in tackling the undersupply of student beds and maintaining the status of the UK’s world-class universities.

CUBO chairman steps down


After three years of tenure, Geoff Pringle felt it timely to step down from his role as CUBO Chairman at the CUBO winter conference in November. Geoff has been a member of CUBO since 1997 when he first joined the HE sector. He has been a member of the Executive for just over three years; Geoff has hosted no less than one winter and two summer conferences in his roles at Birmingham and then Exeter.

Seven winners show growth of business thinking in universities


Congratulations to all winners and those shortlisted in the 2013 CUBO Awards. The Awards ceremony took place on 3rd July, a beautiful summers evening and the first day of the CUBO Summer conference. The seven category winners were presented with their awards by legendary snooker player Steve Davis OBE.

The merit in supporting a creative environment


As leaders, we often have good intentions; however, I am sure I am not alone in finding myself getting sidetracked by the day-to-day froth which accompanies working for a lively university. Whilst time is so valuable (and seems to disappear so quickly) the importance of leadership focused on key areas such as creativity is, I believe, a major component towards success.

Diversification provides new commercial opportunities and an improved customer offer to support university business The challenges facing the HE sector in the UK are well documented and much commented upon. Austerity measures and reduced funding for universities in England and Wales have led many to consider innovative and alternative funding models.
