CUBO RA Awards: Congratulations to all our winners!

This summer, CUBO & ACUHO-I presented the inagural Residence Life Masterclasses and Awards organised by University Hospitality Seminars Ltd

Jan Capper , CEO for CUBO commented, “this was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the work of Residence Life Assistants and Residence Life Professionals  across Higher Education and Private Accommodation Providers.”

CUBO had a fabulous response to the awards with over thirty entries across the categories.

An esteemed panel of international judges was assembled to make the difficult decisions. The panel consisted of Colin Marshall, Director Campus Life, Federation University, Australia; Von Stange, ACUHO-I Vice President, University of Iowa;  Jorick Beiderbecke , Class of 2020 from the Netherlands and Jan Capper CEO of CUBO. The awards were hosted by Richard McGloin, Chair of University Hospitality Seminars.

In total eight awards were presented to Residence Life Assistants by Richard Kington, CUBO Director; the awards recognised outstanding performance within their roles.

The Winner of Residence Life Professional of the Year was presented by David McKown, Director of University Hospitality Seminars to Greg Pevy from The University of Sheffield.

Greg commented “It was an honour to be presented with this award”.  Greg also presented one of the Masterclass sessions at the event on Suicide Intervention alongside Trudie Speed also from The University of Sheffield.

Other presenters at the event included Greg Walters and Lisa Williams who represented ACUHO-I and travelled over from the USA to present plenary sessions and Masterclasses. Lisa Williams currently serves as the Assistant Director, Living Learning Communities & Retention at Eastern Kentucky University. She is responsible for creating and sustaining 16 living learning communities, implementing all departmental faculty initiatives.

Grant Walters currently serves as ACUHO-I’s Director of Educational Programmes and is responsible for creating and implementing rich resources and experiences within the association that support and develop residence life and housing professionals. The sessions presented by Lisa and Grant included “Developing Your Residence Life Links with Faculties” and “The Key to Measuring Success of Residence Life at Your University”.

Other sessions included “Supporting International Students” presented by Stamatious Kandras from Edinburgh University, “Dealing with a Death in the Residences” presented by Ian Munton from Staffordshire University and Claire Slater from Keele University, “Communicating to Your Students about Residence Life” presented by Oliver Harrison and Abigail Henry from Campus Life, “Looking after Your Mate” presented by Rosie Tressler from Student Minds and “Transitioning into University Life” presented by Cheryl Hutton from University of Edinburgh.

All the RA Winners engaged in a panel debate about their role hosted by TV chef and presenter Joe Hurd.
